Addiction Services

Addiction Services offers programs that help prevent or treat the harms caused by alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and gambling.

  • Prevention & Health Promotion: This component of Addiction Services focuses on preventing people from becoming harmfully involved with substance use or gambling. It is done through education and skills training for students in schools, education for the public and for various professional groups, and advocating for healthy public policy.
  • Community-based counselling: This allows people to access professional support and treatment services in communities throughout the District, on an outpatient basis. These services are available at over 20 locations throughout Lunenburg and Queens Counties, including every Middle School and High School, and take place with individuals and groups. These also include specialized programs dealing with nicotine addiction, women’s issues, relapse prevention, problem gambling, family support, and others.
  • Withdrawal Management (Detox) located at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital helps people who need medical assistance and supportive counselling to safely and effectively deal with the early stages of physical and mental withdrawal.
  • Addiction Education Program: A short-term educational program provided on an inpatient or outpatient basis at FMH helps individuals understand substance abuse, addiction, relapse, and early coping strategies to avoid further harmful involvement with alcohol, tobacco or gambling.
  • Structured Treatment Program: This longer-term residential treatment program (located in Middleton) is for those requiring a more structured or intensive type of treatment process.
