Integration, Information & Inspiration Focus of Annual Hospice Palliative Care Conference

People from across Atlantic Canada are gathering in Sydney later this week to take part in this year’s Nova Scotia Hospice Palliative Care Association (NSHPCA) annual conference. The Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Palliative Care Service in Cape Breton is hosting this year’s event. The conference takes place May 27 & 28 at the Membertou Trade & Convention Centre. This year’s theme is “Integration, Information and Inspiration”.

On Friday, May 27, keynote speaker Dr. Sara Davison, Nephrologist will present on "Advance Care Planning: A Fundamental Component of Quality Chronic Disease Management". Dr. Davison heads Alberta’s Provincial Renal Palliative Care Initiative and is recognized internationally as a leader in renal palliative care. She is also the recipient of this year’s Gillian MacMichael Lectureship Award.

The conference also welcomes Dr. Ron McCormick, Dr. Jeanne Ferguson, Dr. David Brake and Dr. Sandra Wajstaub for panel discussions around realistic and patient-centred goals in cancer and chronic disease as well as the role of radiation oncology in palliative care.

Palliative care physician, Dr. David Henderson, along with attorney Jeanne Desveaux will discuss the current policies and legislation surrounding medically assisted dying.

A multi-faith panel will also explore cultural and religious needs at end-of-life. Sharing their knowledge and expertise will be Imam Umran Bhatti (Ahmadiyya Muslim), Tom Sylliboy (Mi’kmaq), Rev. Paul McGillvray (Christian), Rabbi David Ellis (Judaism) and Buddhist Minister, Todd Vassallo. Rev. David Maginley will also be sharing a session on “Spiritually Transformative Experiences at End-of-Life”.

The session on Saturday, May 28 will be dedicated to Advance Care Planning with two workshop streams. Dr. Davison and Dr. Robin Urquhart will facilitate the clinical stream for healthcare providers who are involved in these conversations with patients. Colleen Cash, Executive Director of the NSHPCA will facilitate a stream for volunteers and healthcare providers.
