South Shore Health participating in COPD Collaborative

September 24, 2018/in News /by gnorbertille

South Shore Health is one of 19 Canadian teams participating in the INSPIRED Approaches to COPD Collaborative that is being offered in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim as announced today by the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement.

South Shore Health’s INSPIRED-like COPD program is a quality initiative focusing on implementing care pathways for patients who are hospitalized with exacerbations of moderate to severe COPD. It includes implementing clinical care guidelines; applying a coordinated, interdisciplinary approach; and providing health provider and patient education. It will build and strengthen the linkages between primary health care, acute care, and home care and other community-based supports. The project will be piloted at South Shore Regional Hospital before being implemented across the entire District.

Planned power outage will impact services at FMH

September 24, 2018/in News /by gnorbertille

Lunenburg – The public is advised that there will be a temporary, planned power outage at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital between 7 am and 7 pm, Saturday, October 18.

Some areas of the hospital including the emergency department and medical unit will be without power for several hours. As a result, the emergency department will close for the entire day and visitation will be restricted to immediate family only.

The main elevators will be out of service. Anyone requiring access to the second or third floor of the hospital will need to use the elevator located near the Rehabilitation Services Department on the first floor. The hospital’s telephone system will also be out of service. Calls should be directed to the switchboard at South Shore Regional Hospital at 902-543-4603.

Contingency plans are in place to ensure safe care for patients on the medical unit including battery powered lighting and additional staffing.

The Veterans’ Unit, Restorative Care Centre and Alternate Level of Care Unit will have power.

The power outage is necessary to replace the breakers in the main electrical system in the hospital, which are over 60 years old. The project is being funded by the Department of Health and Wellness and is critical to the ongoing operation of the hospital.

Power is expected to be restored by 7 pm.

Anyone requiring emergency services is advised to call 911 or visit South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater. Patients with non-emergencies should contact Health Link 811 for medical advice. South Shore Health appreciates the public’s support and cooperation and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

Ebola training exercises scheduled for December 4

September 24, 2018/in News /by gnorbertille

South Shore Health has been participating with the Department of Health and Wellness and our partners across the province in planning for a possible or a confirmed case of Ebola. While the risk of Ebola in Nova Scotia remains extremely low, system readiness is a priority.

Part of our ongoing preparations includes testing our processes. To that end, South Shore Health will be conducting exercises at Queens General Hospital Emergency Department this week. The exercises will occur at 11 am and 8:45 pm, December 4 and will involve staff members from a number of different areas including the emergency department and housekeeping.

Additional training and testing will take place in the coming weeks.

The planning we are doing for Ebola builds on plans and protocols that are already in place, and will further enhance our preparedness and response for any future infectious disease situations.

Power outage at SSRH

September 24, 2018/in News /by gnorbertille
At approximately 9:30 pm this evening, there was a fire in an electrical panel at South Shore Regional Hospital, which caused a power failure. The fire was immediately extinguished. No patients or staff were injured. There is currently no power on the fourth floor. Emergency lighting has been put in place. The power surge also impacted the CT scanner, which is currently out of service. Emergency Health Services has ambulances on site to transport patients if necessary.

We are currently assessing the damage and are hopeful we will be able to rebuild the panel and restore power within a few hours.

Emergency services are available and we expect all outpatient services to operate as normal on Thursday. We will provide further updates as new information becomes available.

Preventing the spread of illness

September 24, 2018/in News /by gnorbertille

February 2, 2015

With colds, flu, and stomach viruses circulating in the community, South Shore Health is reminding the public not to visit patients in a hospital or long-term care facility if you are ill.

These viruses spread easily from person to person and are more serious for those who are already ill.

Good hand washing will also help prevent the spread of infection. Please wash your hands when you enter and leave the hospital and before entering and leaving a patient’s room.

South Shore Health appreciates the public’s help in preventing the spread of illness.
